Flicky - for Genesis

Flicky is a bright, chirpy arcade game from Sega, brought to the Sega Genesis in 1991 by Sega Enterprises and Sega of America. It began life in the arcades in 1984, and the Genesis version keeps that simple, irresistible idea intact: Flicky the Bluebird must gather up a crowd of baby birds called Chirps and lead them home, while Tiger the treacherous cat and Iggy the instigating lizard do everything in their power to scatter them. For Sega followers, Flicky carries a little extra history too, since these small blue birds went on to appear in later Sega games.

Each stage is a maze of platforms, and your job is to run, hop and glide through it collecting Chirps, which fall into a line behind you. Touch an enemy and the line scatters, so there is a constant tension between greed and safety: a longer tail of Chirps delivered all at once is worth far more points. You can hop over Tiger and Iggy, or fling whatever is handy at them, a tea cup, a flower pot, an apple, to clear a path. The mazes come dazzling, dark, silly and scary, and between rounds there is a bonus stage where you catch catapulted Chirps in a net. It is a one player game built on high scores and on learning the shape of every maze.

Flicky endures because it is pure arcade design: easy to understand in ten seconds, hard to master, and funny in a gentle way that has not aged. It is the kind of cartridge that pulls in people who do not usually play games, and it rewards practice with real skill. For collectors, Flicky is a lovely piece of Sega's own history, a quieter companion to the company's louder Genesis hits and a reminder of where some familiar faces came from. It belongs in any collection that cares about arcade roots as much as blockbusters.
