Forgotten Worlds is Capcom's scrolling shooter, published by Sega Enterprises for the Sega Genesis in 1989 and one of the console's earliest conversions of a big arcade machine. Many years after mankind dominated the Earth, invaders from another galaxy led by Lord Bios have crushed all opposition and nearly destroyed the planet. You are the last hope, a nameless soldier equipped with an antigravity device and armed with a photon gun, sent to face the Empire in personal, deadly combat. Forgotten Worlds stands out for its hovering hero and its rotating fire, a shooter where you choose your own angle of attack.
You float across huge scrolling battlefields and turn your gun through a full circle, holding an aim steady while the screen pushes forward, which makes every encounter a matter of positioning as much as firing. Along the way you fight the strangest and strongest creatures in the universe, among them lizardmen, the shapeless ones and a fierce bronze dragon. You are not completely alone: shops scattered through the lands let you spend what you take from fallen enemies on better weapons and more protection, so your soldier grows steadily tougher. A second player can join in, and two guns sweeping in different directions turn the game into something close to a team sport.
Players still come back to Forgotten Worlds for that feeling of weight and freedom, a shooter that hovers rather than darts and lets you dictate the angle of the fight. Its monsters and its shops give it more personality than many of its peers, and the two player mode remains one of the better reasons to pass a pad to a friend. For collectors, Forgotten Worlds is early Genesis history, a Capcom arcade game on a Sega cartridge from the days when the console was proving it could bring the arcade home. It is a cornerstone of any Genesis shooter shelf.
