Freedom Force is a light gun shooter developed and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, played with the Nintendo Zapper. You are Rad Rex, working alongside your partner Manic Jackson in an elite counter terrorism unit. A plane has been hijacked by the Bagmen, the hostages aboard need saving, and the trail leads from the aircraft out through the airport and the streets to the hideout of the leader, Eugene Extreme. Freedom Force stands apart from most Zapper games because hesitation is part of it.
Targets appear through doors and windows and from behind cover, and friends are mixed in with foes, so each shot is a quick decision rather than a reflex. Shooting hostages or civilians counts against you, and so does letting Rad's health run out. There are five levels in all: the aeroplane, the gangway, the airport terminal, the street and the hideout. The enemies come armed with guns, machine guns, grenades and missiles, which changes how much time you have to react. Freedom Force supports up to two players.
The Zapper library is small, and Freedom Force is one of the entries that did something thoughtful with it by asking players to judge as well as aim. It still plays well for exactly that reason, and the scenario has a pulpy charm that has aged into real personality. For collectors, Freedom Force is a Sunsoft release worth owning and an obvious companion piece for anyone who keeps a Zapper beside the console.
