Frogger - for Genesis

Frogger brings one of the most recognizable arcade games ever made to the Sega Genesis. Developed by Morning Star Multimedia and published by Majesco Sales in 1998, this conversion arrived unusually late in the console's life, long after most Genesis cartridges had stopped appearing, which gives Frogger a curious place in the system's story. The game itself needs no introduction: guide a frog across a treacherous road and river to safety at the top of the screen.

Both halves of the journey are full of hazards, and any contact costs a life. The road carries cars and trucks at varying speeds, with gaps that open and close as you watch. The river is worse, because the water itself is fatal, and on later levels snakes hover within it as well. Frogger has to read the drifting arrangement of logs, turtles that surface only briefly and alligators whose faces are best avoided, then land in one of the open home cells, ideally one holding a fly for extra points. Fill every home and the next level begins, faster and tighter than the last. Two players can take turns at it, trading the pad and the blame.

Frogger lasts because its rules are perfect: three seconds to learn, a lifetime to play well, and every death clearly your own fault. The appeal is the same now as it was in the arcades, that mix of patience and nerve as you wait for the one gap that works. For collectors, this cartridge is a late chapter in the Genesis library and a chance to keep a true arcade landmark on the shelf beside the console's own classics. Frogger is an easy recommendation for anyone building a collection of pick up and play games, and a reliable way to get a room full of people shouting at a small green frog.
