Front Mission arrived on the Nintendo DS in 2007 from Square Enix, bringing the opening chapter of the long running Front Mission series to players outside Japan, where the series had begun in the mid 1990s. Front Mission is a tactical role playing game about mechanized warfare: pilots climb into towering combat machines called wanzers and fight through a conflict shaped by politics, corporate interest and personal loss. What sets it apart from most handheld strategy games is its tone. In place of fantasy kingdoms it offers a serious military drama, told with a hard edge and a willingness to let its war cost something.
Combat unfolds turn by turn on grid maps. You move your wanzers into position, pick your targets and watch the exchange play out piece by piece, because machines are built from parts and each part can be destroyed. Arms carry weapons, legs carry mobility, and shooting away the right section changes what an enemy is able to do next. Between battles you rebuild your squad from what you buy and recover, mixing bodies, arms, legs and weapons, which makes workshop decisions as important as battlefield ones. Pilots improve as they fight, and the pace of briefing, shopping and deployment suits short sessions well.
Front Mission still has a devoted following because it treats its machines and its war with respect, and because the customization runs deep enough that two players can finish the same campaign with completely different squads. It is also a piece of series history, the starting point that later entries kept referring back to. For collectors, it is one of the more sought after strategy titles on the system, a Square Enix release that never saw the wide print runs of the company's bigger names, and a Front Mission that reads just as well today.
