Gargoyles - for Genesis

Gargoyles for the Sega Genesis was developed by Walt Disney Computer Software and published by Buena Vista Interactive in 1995, drawing on Disney's animated series of the same name. You play as Goliath, whose stone crushing strength carries you through 1,000 years of Gothic adventure, from ancient battlefields to modern day Manhattan. The goal is to find and destroy the evil Eye of Odin before it destroys the world. Gargoyles stands out for its heavy, deliberate animation and for a tone far darker than most cartridges built on a cartoon.

Across 18 stages you challenge armies of ancient Viking warriors and then smash hordes of 3D robots, among them giant Raptorbots, Spiderbots and vicious Waspbots. Goliath can attack in mid air, forcing enemies into close combat high above the ground, and he can scale mammoth towers of stone, hanging on and moving upside down while violent winds and attackers try to whip him off the wall. The cartridge was sold on 24 megs of epic gameplay, and the scale shows in how long the climb lasts. Gargoyles is a single player game, and a demanding one that asks you to learn its stages before you clear them.

Players still talk about Gargoyles for its weight. Goliath moves like something carved from rock, the backdrops are all moonlight and crumbling stone, and the difficulty treats you like someone who came for a fight rather than a stroll. It is also one of the most serious games Disney put on the console, which gives it a place of its own in the library. For collectors, Gargoyles pairs naturally with the Genesis Disney titles while standing apart from them in mood, and it stays a cartridge worth keeping within reach of the console.
