Gauntlet IV is Tengen's 1993 Sega Genesis take on the arcade dungeon crawler, developed by M2 Co. You choose again from Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard and Questor the Elf, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, and from one to four players can join in, since the game supports Sega's four player adapter. What makes Gauntlet IV stand out is how much it builds on the coin op formula: the familiar crush of monsters, keys and food is all here, but it now serves as the foundation for several different ways to play.
Alongside the standard arcade mode there are three more. Quest Mode sends you to defeat four towers and solve the mystery of the ancient castle, with a hub area where merchants sell weapons for the gold you collect and experience points raise your stats as you go. Battle Mode turns the party on itself and asks you to fight your fellows to the death on maps that can include teleporters, monsters and items, with the exits best avoided unless you want to leave the round. Record Mode is arcade play with variations, including a password continue and a twist where you cannot die, though points drain for every 500 health you lose.
Gauntlet IV is still loved because it is one of the best reasons to own Sega's four player adapter. Four friends on one screen, fighting over food and arguing about who grabbed the potion, is a kind of fun that has not aged. Quest Mode gives solo players a reason to stay as well, with its stat growth and shopping trips between towers. For collectors, Gauntlet IV is a notable Tengen release and one of the Genesis library's standout multiplayer cartridges, the sort of game that comes out of the box first when guests arrive.
