Gemfire - for Genesis

Gemfire is a strategy game developed and published by Koei for the Sega Genesis in 1992. Long ago in the land of Ishmeria, six magicians and a dragon were sealed inside the gems of the crown Gemfire, and with their magic locked away the crown held powers meant to help the people. King Eselred turned that power against them instead, destroying towns and fields, until Princess Robyn bravely released the gems from the crown and was locked away in a tower for it. You take the part of a prince or princess of a noble family, out to capture the gems, unite them with the crown and return peace to Ishmeria.

Play is a campaign of planning rather than reflexes, in the Koei tradition of turn based strategy across a map of territories and rival houses. You weigh where to send your forces, who should lead them and when to strike, then watch the fighting play out against the families standing between you and the crown. Every gem you recover brings one of the sealed powers back toward your side, which makes the hunt for them as important as any single victory. Gemfire supports two players, so a friend can take a rival family and turn the war for Ishmeria into a contest between you.

Players still return to Gemfire because it is approachable in a way many strategy games of its era are not. The fantasy setting, the small cast of noble families and the clear goal of reuniting the crown make it easy to begin and hard to set down, while the decisions still carry weight. It is one of the more inviting Koei strategy titles on the Genesis and a fine entry point for anyone curious about the publisher's style. For collectors, Gemfire is a handsome addition to a Genesis strategy shelf and a cartridge that rewards long evenings.
