Genghis Khan - for NES

Genghis Khan is Koei's historical strategy game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published in 1989. You take the part of the great Khan himself, setting out from the Land of Mongols with an army and an ambition, and you build an empire on the bodies of your enemies and the rubble of their conquered cities. Genghis Khan is based on actual history and blends strategy with role playing elements, and it stands out on the console for how seriously it treats the work of ruling: all of Europe and Asia could be yours, but failure means shame in the eyes of your princess, or even death.

Victory on the battlefield asks for bold strategy and clever planning. You outmaneuver your opponent with cavalry, lay siege to his castle with archers, or settle the matter by challenging him to a duel. Peacetime matters just as much, with diplomacy, political tactics and a sharp eye for business deciding whether the next campaign is affordable at all. You can make history as Genghis Khan or take the side of his rivals, Richard the Lionhearted, Emperor Alexious III or Shogun Minamoto of Japan, and up to four players can share the map and fight it out.

Players still love Genghis Khan because it gives a home console the depth people expected from computer strategy at the time without losing the thread of a good story. Decisions carry weight, skill and luck both matter, and a long campaign leaves you with a reign you remember. For collectors it is one of the key Koei releases on the NES, a cartridge that stands apart from almost everything else on the system, and the four player option makes it a rare thing: a grand strategy game a whole room can argue over all evening.
