George Foreman's KO Boxing - for NES

George Foreman's KO Boxing puts a real heavyweight legend on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Beam Software built it, Acclaim Entertainment published it in 1992, and the timing was perfect: Foreman's comeback had made him one of the most talked about figures in the sport, a fighter known above all for ending a night with one punch. That personality is what sets George Foreman's KO Boxing apart from the anonymous ring games around it. You are Big George, the people's champion, with an appetite for big action, and the game serves up a full menu of hard hitting ring work to satisfy it.

The road runs through a roster of heavyweight contenders, each one standing between you and the World Championship. You rock opponents with stinging left and right combinations, watch for the opening, then throw the spectacular Big George Super Punch that the game is named for, while the computer keeps track of the action and the scoring. Learning when to press and when to cover is the heart of it, since contenders higher up the card punish a swinging arm. A second player can take the other corner, so George Foreman's KO Boxing doubles as a quick, loud game for two on the couch.

Players keep coming back to it because it is cheerful and direct about what it wants to be: a boxing game with a famous grin on the box and a knockout waiting at the end of the night. It belongs in a collection for the same reason, as one of the more charming licensed sports titles in the late Nintendo Entertainment System library and a small piece of the Foreman story in cartridge form. Put George Foreman's KO Boxing on the shelf beside your other Acclaim releases and it earns its space with the cover art alone.
