Ghostbusters II - for NES

Ghostbusters II arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Imagineering and published by Activision, and it takes a very different route from the game that came before it. Where the first Ghostbusters was half business simulation, Ghostbusters II is a straight side scrolling action game that marches through scenes drawn from the film. One player, one ghostbuster, a clock running down and a city to cross. The pull is simple and strong: you are heading for the museum, and everything between you and it has to be slimed, trapped or driven past.

Your ghostbuster carries an unlimited supply of slime that fires from a cannon, plus ghost traps for the spirits that need shutting away rather than knocking down, so most stages come down to clearing the path and keeping the clock on your side. Two of them put you behind the wheel of the team's famous car instead of on foot, a welcome change of pace. The one everybody remembers hands you the Statue of Liberty and lets you throw fireballs with her, which is the sort of thing only a film tie in of this era would attempt with a straight face.

Ghostbusters II is loved for exactly that mix of faithfulness and nerve, a game that follows the story beats fans know and then does something gloriously odd with them. It also plays far more directly than its predecessor, which makes it the easier of the two to pick up and enjoy in a single sitting. Collectors tend to want the pair together, and Ghostbusters II completes the set on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
