Ghostbusters - for NES

Ghostbusters brings the 1984 film to the Nintendo Entertainment System: proton packs, ghost traps, a secure storage facility back at headquarters and a city that has suddenly filled up with the dead. Bits Laboratory handled development and Activision published it in 1986. What makes Ghostbusters unusual is that it is only half an action game. The other half is a small business. New York's paranormal psychokinetic energy, the PK level that stands for ghost power, keeps climbing toward the moment the Temple of Zuul awakens and resurrects the evil goddess Gozer, and the only way to hold it back is to run the firm well: take the calls, catch the ghosts, bank the money.

From headquarters you watch a map of midtown Manhattan for ghost alarms and for casual, roaming spirits, then plot a route to the trouble. Driving the Ghostmobile through traffic is a stage of its own, with loose ghosts to be scooped up along the way if they happen to be on your path. At the haunted address the view shifts to the side: two Ghostbusters take position, fire up their proton beams, toss a trap on the ground and try to walk the ghosts over it. Spring the trap and the capture pays, and that money goes straight back into better equipment for the next call.

Players still love Ghostbusters for its mood, that famous theme chugging along underneath while the PK level ticks up, and for the strange, much quoted ending screen that has become part of Nintendo Entertainment System folklore. It is a conversation piece as much as a game, which is exactly why it belongs on a shelf. For collectors of licensed games and early Activision releases, Ghostbusters is one of the titles people always ask about.
