Ghosts 'n Goblins - for NES

Ghosts 'n Goblins is Capcom's armor clad nightmare, brought to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986 by Micronics. The setup is pure fairy tale: a beautiful princess is kidnapped, and her lover, a Knight in shining armor, sets out into Hades, the land of the enemies, to bring her home. What makes Ghosts 'n Goblins stand out is its sheer nerve. Demons, dragons, giants and zombies come at the Knight from every direction from the first screen onward, and the game never apologizes for it.

Five different weapons are scattered through the adventure, each with its own arc and reach, and choosing well matters as much as aiming well. Seven guarded gates stand between the Knight and the princess, and your skill is the only thing that will carry him through them. There are hidden characters too, some friends, some foes, which rewards players who poke at the scenery instead of sprinting straight ahead. Movement is deliberate and the jumps commit, so Ghosts 'n Goblins becomes a game of learning patterns, memorizing where the trouble appears and buying yourself one more step with every attempt.

Its reputation is the reason it endures: Ghosts 'n Goblins is one of the hardest games on the system and wears that like a badge. Players love the moment it finally clicks, when a screen that killed them twenty times goes down clean. For collectors it is an essential early Capcom release, the start of a line that ran for decades, and a cartridge that can empty a room of bragging in about four minutes. Ghosts 'n Goblins belongs on any shelf that claims to cover the Nintendo Entertainment System properly.
