Ghouls'n Ghosts - for Genesis

Ghouls'n Ghosts is Capcom's 1989 Sega Genesis version of its arcade quest for the knight Arthur, who must venture back to Lucifer's palace, destroy the demon and recover the Princess' soul so she can be brought back to life. Capcom both developed and published it, and the Genesis release became one of the system's early showpieces: large detailed sprites, heavy animation and an atmosphere of gothic gloom that still sets it apart. Ghouls'n Ghosts opens in the graveyard and marsh territory familiar from the first game, then moves on to a tower, a mass of skeletons and a castle.

You play alone, running and jumping across each stage while throwing weapons at waves of the undead. Arthur can fire upward and downward as well as straight ahead, which matters because enemies claw their way out of the ground and swoop in from above. Armour doubles as your health: one hit strips the bravest knight in the land down to his underwear, and he fights on regardless until a second hit finishes him. Weapon pickups trade your lance for discs, scythes and other tools, each with its own arc and speed, golden armour grants a magic ability, and every stage ends in a boss.

Players still love Ghouls'n Ghosts for its honesty. It is a hard game, but the difficulty is readable, and every death teaches a pattern worth remembering. The artwork holds up, the music is a classic of the era, and a run that lasts a few minutes at a time suits a quick session as easily as a long evening spent trying to clear one more stage. For collectors, Ghouls'n Ghosts sits near the top of any Genesis action shelf: a Capcom arcade conversion from the system's first years that people keep coming back to, and a natural companion to the rest of your Capcom cartridges.
