Gods - for Genesis

Gods is The Bitmap Brothers' platform adventure, brought to the Sega Genesis in 1992 and published by Mindscape. You play Hercules, who is aiming to achieve immortality by completing the task the Gods have set him, and the setting is an ancient Greece of stone halls, traps and strange guardians. What makes Gods stand out is its temperament. It is slower and far more considered than most action platformers of the time, and it carries the cool metallic look and precise presentation that made The Bitmap Brothers one of the most recognisable studios of the period.

One player works through a series of worlds built as much from locked doors, keys, switches and hidden rooms as from enemies. Gods is best known for its artificial intelligence system, in which creatures monitor how you play and try to find safer positions, so the opposition adapts instead of simply repeating itself. The game also offers more bonuses and power ups if you are struggling to progress, and there are plenty of bonus sections to find and unlock even without that help. Treasure gathered along the way can be put towards better weapons and equipment, which rewards players who search every corner.

Gods still has a devoted following because it asks for patience and then rewards it. The puzzles are fair, the throwing weapons feel weighty, and the presentation, all cold steel and clean lettering, remains one of the most distinctive looks of the sixteen bit years. Hercules moves deliberately on purpose: you learn to read a room before you walk into it. For collectors, Gods is a different kind of Genesis platformer, a computer game sensibility carried across to a library full of mascots and speed, and it is one of only a handful of Bitmap Brothers titles you can play on the system.
