Golden Axe II - for Genesis

Golden Axe II is the 1992 sequel from Sega Enterprises, published by Sega of America and built for the Genesis rather than converted from an arcade machine. The dreaded Dark Guld has taken the legendary symbol of peace, and the Barbarian, the Amazon and the Dwarf set out once more to chop down the forces of evil and recapture the Golden Axe. If the first game established the look and the weight of the series, Golden Axe II refines it: bigger stages, a darker tone and tougher opposition, made specifically for players who already knew the first adventure inside out.

Two players can fight together through the quest, choosing a warrior and working across a run of stages towards the demon Dark Guld himself. The fighting adds tough new warrior skills on top of the familiar sword swings and throws, and magic is handled with more flexibility, so you can spend a little or hold your flasks back for a dazzling full strength spell when a boss appears. Potions still come from the thieves you shake down between stages, mounts can still be taken from their riders, and a separate duel mode pits you against waves of enemies outside the main story.

Players still love Golden Axe II because it is the series at its most comfortable: everything you liked about the first game, tuned and expanded, with a soundtrack and a sense of scale that suit a long evening of cooperative play. Lifting your mighty blade high to crush Dark Guld never really gets old. For collectors, Golden Axe II is the natural middle piece of a Genesis trilogy, and plenty of longtime fans will argue it is the best of the three. A Genesis shelf with the first game but not this one looks unfinished.
