Golden Axe III - for Genesis

Golden Axe III arrived in 1993, developed by Sega CS1 and published by Sega Enterprises, and it closes out the Genesis trilogy. Damud Hellbringer, the Prince of Darkness, has taken away the Golden Axe and laid an evil curse over all the warriors. One hero is freed from that curse and sent out to set things straight: lift the curse from the others, defeat the villain and bring the Golden Axe home. Coming late in the system's life, Golden Axe III is the entry many players never got around to, which makes discovering it now a genuine pleasure.

Two players can take the quest on together, choosing from a roster of warriors that includes new faces alongside the familiar types, each with their own reach, speed and magic. The fighting is the most developed in the series: alongside the sword swings, throws and spells there is a guard, so timing and spacing matter more than before. Golden Axe III also branches. At certain points you choose where to go next, which sends you to different stages and towards different conclusions, so finishing the game once does not mean you have seen all of it.

Golden Axe III is loved by the people who know it for exactly that reason. It gives the series something the first two did not have, a reason to come back and take the other road, and it does so without losing the heavy, satisfying swing that makes Golden Axe what it is. For collectors it is the piece that completes the set, and the one that tends to be talked about least, so owning it says something. If you have the first two Golden Axe cartridges on the shelf, Golden Axe III is the one to track down next.
