Golf Grand Slam - for NES

Golf Grand Slam brought a serious round of golf to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. Developed by TOSE and published by Atlus, it sets out to put the conditions of a real course in front of you rather than just a flag and a swing meter. Wind resistance, sloping greens and awkward fairways all shape the shot you choose, and the full bag of 14 clubs is there to be learned rather than guessed at. For NES players who wanted their golf thoughtful, Golf Grand Slam was one of the more studious options on the system.

Play revolves around three decisions: the club in your hands, the point where the clubface meets the ball, and the line you give a putt once you reach the green. Golf Grand Slam includes two training modes built specifically for sharpening those techniques, so you can drill your swing and your putting before any of it counts. When you feel ready, the tournament sets you against the Golf Grand Slam Top 30 Pros, a field that will test everything the training taught you. Up to four players can take part, which makes it a good fit for a living room group.

Decades on, Golf Grand Slam still appeals because it respects the sport. There is no shortcut to a good score here, just reading the wind, trusting your club selection and learning each green, and that slow improvement is what keeps players coming back to it. It is also easy to overlook next to the bigger names on the NES sports shelf, which is precisely why it is satisfying to own. Slot this cartridge in beside your other sports titles and Golf Grand Slam gives your collection a quietly deep round that plays as well now as it did in 1991.
