Golf - for NES

Golf is Nintendo's own take on the sport, developed and published in house in 1984, and one of the earliest sports games the company put on cartridge. It is also one of the quietly influential ones. The template Golf set, pick your club, line up the shot, time your swing and watch the wind decide how clever you really were, is the one golf games have followed ever since. Nintendo sold it on realism, promising state of the art graphics and game play that would have you believing you were out on the fairways, and for 1984 that was no idle boast.

You choose your clubs, change your stance, control your swings and even select the angle of impact, which is far more control than the simple presentation suggests. Each hole can be viewed close up and from far away, so you can plan the route before committing to it. Conditions matter: you judge the changing state of the green and measure the wind velocity, and when the wind changes, so does the flight of your ball. A second player can share the round, and Golf is at its best that way, two people taking turns and watching each other's approach shots drift into trouble.

Golf is still a pleasure because it is honest. Nothing stands between you and the swing, so good shots feel earned and bad ones are nobody's fault but yours. A round fits into a spare half hour, and the difficulty comes from the wind and the green rather than from anything artificial. For collectors it is a cornerstone piece, a first party Nintendo release from the very start of the Nintendo Entertainment System library, and one of those cartridges that shows you where a whole genre came from.
