Gotcha! The Sport! - for NES

Gotcha! The Sport! came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Sanritsu Denki and published by LJN. It takes paintball, then a fast growing weekend sport, and turns it into a light gun game: you hold the Nintendo Zapper, you carry a limited supply of paint pellets, and you are alone against a field of opponents who shoot back. Few NES titles pointed the Zapper at anything other than ducks and gangsters, and that is a large part of what makes Gotcha! The Sport! stand out.

Play is quick and direct. Opponents turn up around you and you point, fire and mark them with a paint splot before they do the same to you, with your pellet supply making every shot worth aiming properly. The action moves between three settings: dense green woods, a steamy urban stretch and a snow covered winter forest, each one changing how easily you spot a player hiding in the scenery. It is a one player game built on reflexes and nerve, since the only real defense in Gotcha! The Sport! is shooting first and shooting straight.

Light gun games have a particular kind of staying power, and Gotcha! The Sport! still delivers it: stand up, point at the screen, and see how long you last. It is short, loud and honest about what it wants to be, which makes it a great cartridge to hand to a guest who has never held a Zapper. For collectors it fills a specific gap, as the NES light gun shelf is a small one and this is among its more unusual entries. Keep a Zapper hooked up and Gotcha! The Sport! earns its place in the rotation.
