Gradius is Konami's 1986 landmark, developed and published in house and carried over to the Nintendo Entertainment System from the arcade. You fly the hyper space fighter Vic Viper as the last hope of the gentle people of Gradius, pushing back an all out attack by the amoeboid Bacterions. What set Gradius apart was its power up system: instead of grabbing whatever an enemy drops, you collect capsules and spend them from a selection bar, choosing speed, missiles, a double shot, lasers, Options or a force field in whatever order suits the way you play.
That choice is the heart of how Gradius plays. Each stage scrolls horizontally through its own hazards, from volcanic surfaces that spit fireballs to the famous Moai heads, and each one ends at a boss guarding the way deeper into Bacterion territory. At the center of it all sits the Xaerous Superfortress, the nerve center of the Bacterion Bio Computer. Lose your ship and you lose your upgrades, so recovery becomes a skill in itself, and knowing which power up to take and when is what separates a long run from a short one. Two players can take turns at the controls.
Gradius is where a whole family of shooters began, and players still return to it because the design holds up without needing nostalgia to prop it up. It is tough but fair, readable at a glance, and endlessly replayable once you settle on a build you trust. NES owners also know this cartridge as the home of gaming's most repeated button sequence, the Konami Code, which became famous here. For a collection, Gradius is close to essential: a shooter that defined the genre's vocabulary and still makes its own case every time you start a run.
