Granada - for Genesis

Granada is Wolf Team's 1990 Sega Genesis shooter, developed and published by the studio. The setup is pure near future hardware fiction: the Super Strategic Defense Initiative of the 1990s banned intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads, so by the year 2016 warfare has moved to super strategic mobile weapons. You command Granada, a Hypertek Cannon Tank, through the peaceful streets of Tobora. What makes Granada stand out is how fast and how loud it is for a 1990 cartridge, with a driving soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba that fans of his later work still seek out.

This is a single player game played from above. Granada drives in all directions while its cannon aims independently, so you learn to circle a target while keeping the gun trained on it. Defense comes from shield and radar rather than raw plating, and the offensive loadout includes interceptors that fire in several directions at once, long range homing missiles and a device designed to wipe out everything opposing you. Stages are short, dense and aggressive, building to set piece battles against the giant flying battleship Astarsha and against Valsic, a rival Hypertek Cannon Tank that fights the way you do.

Granada has a lasting cult reputation among Genesis shooter players. The independent turret gives it a feel almost nothing else on the system has, the pace is relentless, and the music is the kind people remember decades later. It is approachable too: short stages make it easy to pick up for ten minutes and chase a better run. For collectors, Granada is one of those cartridges that separates a general Genesis collection from a shooter collection, an early Wolf Team release with a sound and a style all its own, and a fine neighbour to the rest of your Genesis shooters.
