Guerrilla War - for NES

Guerrilla War is SNK's 1988 overhead action game, developed and published by SNK and adapted for the Nintendo Entertainment System from its arcade cabinet. Two unnamed rebel commandos raid an unnamed Caribbean island to free it from the rule of an unnamed tyrannical dictator, and the whole thing moves at the pace of a run through a war film. What makes Guerrilla War stand out is the combination: a steady scroll into enemy territory, hordes of soldiers in the way, and hostages scattered through it all who you are meant to protect rather than ignore.

You walk forward, shoot in eight directions and clear the ground ahead with your gun and your grenades, picking up whatever heavier firepower the island offers along the way. Tougher opposition and stage bosses break up the march. The hostages are the moral arithmetic of the game: freeing them is worth points, while catching one in your own crossfire costs you a large score deduction, so spraying fire everywhere has a price. Two players can fight side by side at the same time, and that is how most people remember Guerrilla War, one player clearing the left while the other covers the right.

Guerrilla War still plays well because cooperative run and gun games are timeless. It is loud, fast and far easier with a friend, and its difficulty is the kind you chip away at by learning the route. The hostage rule gives it a touch of discipline that similar games of the era left out. Collectors value it as one of the solid two player action cartridges on the NES, sitting comfortably beside the better known commando games of the late eighties. If your shelf already holds a few of those, Guerrilla War is a natural addition to it.
