Hard Drivin' came to the Sega Genesis in 1990, converted by Sterling Silver Software and published by Tengen. It brought home one of the landmark arcade machines of the late eighties, a driving game that traded painted scenery for a true 3D display built from solid polygons. Sure, driving a real high performance car can be quite a blast, but where else can you take a vertical loop at speed? Hard Drivin' is where. The sense of a heavy car reacting to the road, the hills and the drops was unlike anything else on a home console at the time.

You get two courses. The Speed Track is for putting the pedal to the metal and chasing a clean lap, while the Stunt Track sends you over a jumping drawbridge and through a full 360 degree loop. Steering, braking and gear changes all matter, and so does committing to a jump at the right speed, because coming up short has consequences. Lose control and Hard Drivin' shows you an instant replay of the wreck from a second camera, which turns every mistake into a small piece of theatre. It is a single player challenge, timed and scored, with lap times to chip away at.

People still come back to Hard Drivin' because it was genuinely ambitious: a polygon driving simulator squeezed onto a cartridge years before 3D was ordinary. It is demanding, a little unforgiving, and all the more satisfying once the Stunt Track finally gives in. No license, and no car, required. For collectors it marks an important moment in both arcade and Genesis history, and it sits naturally beside the other Tengen releases. Hard Drivin' is a conversation piece as much as a game, and a fine one to hand to a visitor who thinks early 3D never worked.
