Heavy Nova arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Holocronet and published by Micronet. It casts you into a set of simulated proving grounds, piloting a heavy combat robot through tests designed to measure what it can do. Heavy Nova stands out for its structure: rather than committing to one genre it alternates between two, so a stretch of platforming is always followed by a duel. It also stands out for its presentation, with weighty, deliberate animation and a melodic soundtrack that gave the game a character quite unlike the quicker action titles around it.
The proving grounds split into two styles of alternating action. In the first you push through a hostile environment of enemies, bombs and traps, moving horizontally at first and later with vertical scrolling as well, earning points for finishing quickly and with plenty of energy left. Your robot can fly and kick as the situation demands. Clear that section and you move into one on one combat against a rival machine, in the style of the big fighting games of the day. Early opponents carry far less energy than you start with, and as you progress you are awarded extra attacking moves to add to your repertoire. Two players can face off as well.
Heavy Nova has kept a devoted following because it is unusual and unhurried, a game with its own rhythm that asks you to learn the weight of your machine rather than mash through it. Players who give it that patience tend to defend it warmly. For collectors it is one of the more distinctive Micronet releases on the Genesis and an interesting document of an era when developers were still happily mixing genres inside a single cartridge. If your shelf leans toward the mech and robot corner of the library, Heavy Nova earns its place there.
