Home Alone - for NES

Home Alone brings the hit Christmas film to the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Bethesda Softworks and published by THQ in 1991. Kevin McAllister has been left behind while his family goes away on vacation, which would be fine on its own, except that two burglars, Harry and Marv, the Wet Bandits, have picked his house for the night. Kevin has no intention of playing the victim. What makes Home Alone work is that it builds a game out of the best part of the film: you are not fighting the burglars so much as outsmarting them with whatever happens to be lying around the house.

Home Alone is a side scroller set across the McAllister house. You walk Kevin from room to room collecting icons that stand for different kinds of traps, then drop them on the floor in the path of a burglar. A burglar who walks into a trap is stunned and you score for it, and Kevin can then slip past and go looking for more. The loop is simple, and the pressure comes from timing and position, since Harry and Marv keep moving while you are busy gathering. It is a single player game.

People keep coming back to Home Alone because the film is an annual ritual in a lot of households, and the cartridge slots neatly into that tradition every December. It is also a curiosity with a story attached, since Home Alone was made by Bethesda Softworks long before the studio became known for enormous adventures. For collectors, that combination of a famous license, a holiday setting and an unexpected developer makes Home Alone one of the more conversational pieces on a Nintendo Entertainment System shelf.
