Hydlide - for NES

Hydlide is an action game with strong role playing elements, made by T&E Soft and brought to the Nintendo Entertainment System by FCI in 1986. An evil demon named Varalys has cast a curse on the princess Ann, turning her into three fairies, and you take the role of Sir Jim, who must find the fairies and then face Varalys himself. Only by vanquishing the demon can the curse be lifted and the kingdom saved. Hydlide matters because of when it arrived: it is one of the earliest attempts to put a role playing adventure into a living world rather than behind a menu.

Play means exploring wide stretches of wilderness, descending into dungeons and clearing enemies as you go. Combat works by contact, in the manner of the Ys games: you steer Sir Jim into an enemy to damage it while keeping it off your sides and back. A single button switches between an attacking stance and a defensive one, and magic spells offer another way to clear a path. Your character grows stronger and his statistics improve as you press further, so progress in Hydlide comes from both exploration and patient leveling.

Hydlide has a reputation for being demanding and sparing with its hints, and that is a large part of why people still talk about it. It asks you to map the land yourself, work out what items do and learn when to attack and when to guard, and it is genuinely satisfying when the pieces fall into place. Taken on its own terms it is a window into an early moment in the action role playing genre. For collectors, Hydlide is an important piece of that history, a T&E Soft design that shaped what came after and a cartridge that always starts a conversation.
