Ice Hockey - for NES

Ice Hockey is a sports game developed by Pax Softnica and published by Nintendo in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. You choose a country for yourself and one for your opponent, settle on a level of play, and face off at center ice. What makes Nintendo Ice Hockey stand out is the team building: each of the four skaters on your side can be set as a light, medium or heavy build, and that choice changes how fast they move, how hard they shoot and how well they hold up against a check.

Games are fast and physical, with passing, tip ins, body checks, penalties and power plays all part of the flow. Put together a line of quick skaters and you can fly past a slower team, or load up on heavy players and win the puck by force, and most people settle on a mix of the two. A penalty leaves you short handed and tests your defense, while a power play is your chance to crowd the net. Two people can play at once, which is how Ice Hockey has always been at its best.

Ice Hockey has outlasted far more detailed sports games because its rules are quick to learn and its matches never drag. Picking your skaters before the puck drops gives every game a small strategic edge, and the result still comes down to who handles the puck better. It remains a reliable choice when there are two players and a short amount of time. For collectors, Ice Hockey is a Nintendo published sports title that sits comfortably beside the company's best known work, and a cartridge that tends to stay near the top of the pile.
