Ikari Warriors - for NES

Ikari Warriors brought SNK's arcade hit to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, in a conversion handled by Micronics and published by SNK. You take the role of one of two commando style warriors, Ralf and Clark, fighting through enemy ground on the long way to the village of Ikari. Tanks, enemy soldiers and helicopters all stand in the way. Ralf and Clark would go on to become familiar faces in SNK's later games, which makes Ikari Warriors the starting point for characters a lot of players know long before they know this cartridge.

The action is top down and scrolls vertically, with two players able to fight side by side from the start. You move and shoot in eight directions, lob grenades at anything dug in, and collect the items scattered along the route to improve your firepower and keep your supplies topped up. Abandoned tanks can be commandeered, which turns a desperate advance into a short lived rampage until the shells run out. Ikari Warriors asks for steady nerves, because a single hit ends a life.

Ikari Warriors has a reputation, and it is a hard one: this is among the toughest games on the console, and finishing it is a genuine badge of honor. People keep coming back anyway, partly for the two player mode and partly because the game is so quick to restart that another attempt always feels reasonable. It is also a piece of SNK history, the first chapter of a series that ran across the console. For collectors, Ikari Warriors is a cornerstone of the Nintendo Entertainment System shooter shelf and a cartridge with real stories attached.
