Infiltrator - for NES

Infiltrator was developed by Chris Gray Enterprises and published by Mindscape for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. You play Captain Johnny "Jimbo Baby" McGibbits, a hero who already left the Mad Leader in ruins once and now has to do it again, because intelligence reports say the Mad Leader has risen from the ashes and gone back to work. Infiltrator stands out because it is really two games on one cartridge, a flight section and a ground section, held together by a sense of humour that never quite lets the briefing room take itself seriously.

The first half puts you in the cockpit of your Gizmo attack chopper, flying behind enemy lines with instruments to read, altitude and heading to manage, and other aircraft to answer with the correct codes rather than the correct missile. Land safely and Infiltrator switches to an overhead view for the ground mission, where you move through the enemy complex on foot, lean on disguises and gadgets, avoid or disable guards, and come away with what you were sent for. Each mission reaches deeper into the Mad Leader's new headquarters, and this time he knows exactly who is coming.

Infiltrator is loved for that mix. Very few console games of the era asked you to fly carefully and then sneak quietly, and fewer still did it with such a straight face about such a silly premise. The flight half teaches patience, the ground half teaches planning, and the two together make Infiltrator feel like a complete mission rather than a set of levels. For collectors it is a fine example of a home computer idea carried over to a console, and an easy conversation starter on a shelf otherwise full of run and gun shooters.
