Infinite Space - for NDS

Infinite Space is a space opera built exclusively for Nintendo DS. Developed by Nude Maker with PlatinumGames, produced by Atsushi Inaba, directed by Hifumi Kouno and published by Sega in 2009, it is one of the most ambitious role playing games the handheld ever carried. You follow Yuri, a young man who leaves home to see the galaxy, and the story that grows out of that decision spans years, factions and more than two hundred characters. Infinite Space is dense with text and consequence, with a scope that stretched the DS hardware to its limit, and it never talks down to the player.

The heart of it is your fleet. More than one hundred and fifty ships can be acquired, built, outfitted and customized, with modules slotted into hulls to balance engines, weapons, crew quarters and armor, and you command several vessels at once in battle. Fights play out at a distance, closing and backing off as a gauge fills, choosing between barrages, dodges and boarding actions, so positioning and timing matter more than raw firepower. Away from combat you recruit crew, take jobs, make decisions that steer the story and talk your way through a galaxy of ports. Infinite Space also supports a second player for ship battles.

Infinite Space has a devoted following because it is unlike anything else on the system: a hard, text heavy, genuinely sprawling science fiction epic on a handheld, with a story that is willing to be cruel. It rewards planning and punishes carelessness, and finishing it feels like something you earned. Copies have become a quiet favorite among collectors of Nintendo DS role playing games, and Infinite Space deserves a place on the shelf next to the system's better known classics.
