Jaws - for NES

Jaws arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Escape and published by LJN, bringing the most famous shark in cinema to a home console. The setup is pure pulp and all the better for it: there has never been a Great White in these warm tropical waters, so this one must be something else. It seems possessed. It seems to be hunting you, personally. Jaws hands you a boat, a map and a small arsenal and asks whether you can strike back before the shark finishes what it started. For many players this cartridge was their first chance to settle the score themselves.

Play alternates between two views. Above the waves you steer across a top down map of the islands, watching for the fin that tracks you, and below them you dive into side view stretches of ocean crowded with jellyfish, rays and other hazards. Gear matters: the sailboat, the mini sub, scuba equipment and a sea plane all have their part, and items brought up from the water build your strength for the fight that counts. A one player game throughout, Jaws keeps its weapons, explosives and maps close at hand, and it is not over until only one of you is left alive.

Jaws is brisk, strange and much talked about, which is exactly why it still gets played. It is a game of a particular moment in NES history, when film licences were everywhere and anything felt possible, and it has aged into something genuinely charming. Collectors tend to know the box art on sight, and the cartridge remains one of the friendlier ways to add a famous name to an NES shelf. Pick up Jaws for the nostalgia, keep it for the way one unlucky dive can still make you flinch.
