Jeopardy! - for Genesis

Jeopardy! arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Park Place Productions and published by GameTek, and it is a careful translation of television's longest running quiz show rather than a loose imitation. Alex Trebek hosts, and he is present in digitized form: his photography, his voice and the familiar theme music, along with a digitized version of the studio itself. GameTek built this one on a simple idea, that shouting at the television and then calmly saying "I knew that" is never quite enough, and that Jeopardy! fans deserve the chance to really buzz in.

Play follows the show closely. You pick a category and a dollar amount, read the clue and ring in with your response phrased as a question, working across the board and on toward Final Jeopardy! The cartridge carries over 3,500 questions and answers across 700 categories, enough to keep the boards fresh for many sessions without repeats. Up to three players can take part, so the podiums can be filled by friends or by computer opponents, and the Genesis version makes real use of the console's graphics and sound to sell the atmosphere of the studio.

Quiz games live or die on their question bank and their presentation, and Jeopardy! on the Genesis has both. It remains one of the best party cartridges on the system, the kind of game that pulls in people who would never otherwise pick up a controller, and the pleasure of beating a friend to the buzzer has not aged a day. For collectors, Jeopardy! is a snapshot of an era when television game shows were a staple of console libraries, and a GameTek release that belongs next to the rest of the Genesis quiz and party titles.
