Jimmy Connors Tennis - for NES

Jimmy Connors Tennis arrived for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by NMS Software and published by Ubi Soft. It carries the name of a player with a remarkable record: ranked number one for 159 weeks, holder of eight Grand Slam titles and 109 singles titles, more than any other player in history. Now you are Connors, battling your way toward the top of the rankings. Coming so late in the NES story, Jimmy Connors Tennis is one of the system's final sports releases, and it benefits from everything developers had learned about the hardware by then.

The game gives you a choice of three court surfaces, grass, hard and clay, each changing the pace of a rally, and three skill levels covering beginner, intermediate and advanced. You can settle into training mode to groove your strokes or enter tournament mode and work through the draw, and singles matches support one or two players, so a friend on the second controller can take the other baseline. Serve placement, court positioning and patience all matter here, which is why Jimmy Connors Tennis rewards players who think a point through instead of swinging at everything.

Tennis translates beautifully to simple controls, and that is why this one still gets picked up. Jimmy Connors Tennis is easy to understand within a game or two and surprisingly hard to master at the advanced level, the right shape for a sports cartridge you return to. Its late release date makes it less commonly seen than the big names of the NES library, which is part of its appeal to collectors filling out the final years of the console. On a shelf of NES sports titles, Jimmy Connors Tennis is both a good game and a genuinely interesting date stamp.
