Joe Montana II - Sports Talk Football - for Genesis

Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football, developed by BlueSky Software and published by Sega of America in 1991, is the sequel that gave Genesis football a voice. Joe is back, and this time the game talks: continuous play by play announcing runs alongside the action, calling the game from the broadcast booth while you are still in the middle of it. In 1991 that was a genuine leap, and it is still the first thing people mention about Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football among sixteen bit sports cartridges.

On the field it is a full football game built around presentation. The wide view shows all your receivers at once, then the camera zooms to a dazzling 6X close up as the players cross the line of scrimmage, so every slamming interception, flying tackle and smash through the defensive wall happens up close and personal. You call from a playbook of over fifty plays, with conditions covering rain and snow, grass and artificial field. Two players can take part together, one playing quarterback while the other takes the ball as wide receiver.

The commentary is what everyone remembers, but Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football earned its reputation because the game underneath is good: readable, fast and genuinely tense in the closing minutes. It is the sort of cartridge that makes a room lean forward, and the running description from the booth still gives a two player game the feel of a televised Sunday afternoon. For collectors it is one of the key Genesis sports releases, a BlueSky Software title that pushed the hardware in an unexpected direction, and a cornerstone of any Sega sports shelf.
