Justice League: Task Force brought DC's best known super team to the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Sunsoft and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It is a one on one fighting game with a roster drawn straight from the comics: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Green Arrow, set against the evil Darkseid and his henchmen Despero and Cheetah. What stands out is the premise. Before the League can get anywhere near Darkseid, its members have to fight each other, which gives every matchup a reason to exist.
There are two ways to play. Story Mode follows that plot through a run of fights, while Battle Mode is for straightforward exhibition bouts and opens the villains up as playable characters as well. Two players can take each other on, which is where Justice League: Task Force is at its best. Each hero fights in a way that suits the character, so Superman and The Flash handle nothing like Green Arrow, and learning who answers whom is most of the appeal.
Justice League: Task Force is remembered partly as the Genesis take on a game that also appeared on the Super Nintendo in a quite different form, and comparing the two is part of the fun for fighting game fans. More simply, it lets you settle the arguments comic readers have always had: Batman against Wonder Woman, The Flash against Superman. For collectors, Justice League: Task Force is a key piece of the DC licensed lineup on Sega hardware, and a two player game that still gets pulled out when friends are over.
