KickMaster - for NES

Kick Master arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Kid and published by Taito America, and it is one of the console's late bloomers. The evil wizard Belzed and his forces have attacked the kingdom of Lowrel, killed its king and queen and kidnapped princess Silphee, leaving the aspiring martial artist Thonolan to set things right. What makes Kick Master stand out is its restriction: Thonolan fights almost entirely with his legs, and the whole combat system is built out of kicks.

Kick Master is a side scrolling action platformer with a layer of growth underneath it. Defeated enemies drop items that refill health or magic, grant an extra life, hurt you if you grab the wrong one, or add experience. Gaining a level raises Thonolan's maximum magic and teaches new kicks, including sliding, flying, roundhouse and butterfly kicks, so his moveset widens as the journey gets harder. Spells found along the way deal damage, shield him or restore health, and choosing between a kick and a spell is the heart of most fights. Kick Master is a one player quest.

Players still talk about Kick Master because of how much it packs in. The experience system, the growing list of kicks and the dark, moody art give it more depth than the genre usually offers, and its soundtrack is widely praised. Late NES releases tend to look and sound confident, and Kick Master is a clear example of a studio using everything it had learned. For collectors it is a standout Taito title and a good answer to anyone who assumes the NES action shelf holds only familiar names. Kick Master belongs in a collection that values the system's last and most ambitious years.
