King's Knight - for NES

King's Knight is a fast moving fantasy shooter released in 1986, developed by Workss and published by Squaresoft, which makes it one of the earliest titles to carry the Square name. The story sends four brave warriors into the Kingdom of Izander, where Princess Claire is held in the grip of a fiendish Dragon. What makes King's Knight stand out is the way it folds character growth into a scrolling shooter: this is a quest, told with the pace and pressure of an arcade game.

Play moves upward through five stages, with the screen scrolling steadily while you fire ahead and clear whatever blocks your path. The team is made up of a Knight, a Wizard, a Monster and a Thief, and each one handles differently, so learning their strengths is half the challenge. The scenery hides as much as the enemies do: shooting into the landscape turns up items that raise your speed, your jump and your attack power, and those gains carry forward. It is a single player game, demanding and unforgiving, built for players who like to study a stage until they know every danger in it.

Collectors know King's Knight as a landmark curiosity, the point where a young Squaresoft was still working out what a fantasy adventure could feel like. Players keep coming back for its strange, stubborn difficulty and for the satisfaction of finally guiding the party through to the Dragon. Sitting on a shelf beside the later fantasy classics, King's Knight tells a story about where they came from, and it still plays like nothing else on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
