Kirby & The Amazing Mirror - for GBA

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror reached the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Capcom and published by Nintendo. There is trouble in neighboring Mirror World, and when Kirby goes to help he is attacked by a shadowy Meta Knight and split into four colored versions of himself, who set off on the adventure together. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror stands out for two reasons: it is Kirby's first four player simultaneous adventure, and it trades the usual run of separate stages for one enormous connected world that you slowly uncover.

The map is laid out in the manner of Metroid, a single sprawling overworld revealed piece by piece, with mirrors linking areas and plenty of corners that stay dark until you find the right route. Kirby still inhales enemies and copies their abilities, and the four Kirbies can call on one another when a fight or a gap needs more help. Hidden treasure chests are tucked away throughout, holding overworld layouts, life bar extensions, different colors for Kirby and unlockable music and sound effects, which turns exploring into a reward of its own.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is remembered as the odd one out in the series and loved for exactly that. The freedom to wander, the gentle difficulty and the sheer amount hidden in its corners make it a game people finish and then immediately start picking apart, and the four player mode still works beautifully with friends sitting side by side. For collectors, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is an essential Game Boy Advance platformer and the most adventurous thing Kirby has ever done with a map.
