Klash Ball - for NES

Klash Ball, also styled Klashball, is Sofel's vision of sport several hundred years from now, developed and published by Sofel for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. In a stadium of the 23rd century, techno gladiators meet in teams of five, each side fighting to deliver a three kilo metallic energy sphere into the opposing goal zone. What sets Klash Ball apart is the arena itself, a surreal space fitted with a warp tunnel, a ball launcher and magnetically charged bounce domes that turn every loose ball into a gamble.

Matches combine contact with speed and finesse, so you are charging, passing and shoving in the same breath, hunting for the angle that gets the sphere past five defenders. Klash Ball carries a complete league system: 11 rowdy teams, each with its own skills, strengths and weaknesses, and a central computer that analyses every outcome and records the stats, so a season builds up a history you can chase. You can take on the computer alone, or klash it out with a friend, which is where the game really comes alive.

Klash Ball still has a following because it does what the best invented sports do: it hands you rules you have never played by, then makes them feel natural after three matches. The pace is quick, the hits are heavy, and the arena gadgets keep sensible tactics from ever settling into routine. For collectors it is one of the more distinctive entries in Sofel's small Nintendo Entertainment System library, and for anyone who keeps a second controller close by, Klash Ball is the kind of cartridge that stays within reach.
