KLAX - for Genesis

Klax is a tile matching puzzle game, and this Sega Genesis cartridge carries the Tengen version, developed and published by Tengen in 1991. The game has an unusual history on Sega hardware: Namco produced the first Mega Drive conversion in Japan, but when Tengen decided not to bring that one overseas they built a port of their own instead. The result is a pair of distinct takes on the same arcade classic, with Namco's offering competitive multiplayer and Tengen's Klax putting its energy into options and configuration.

Play has colored tiles tumbling down a ramp toward you while you slide a paddle left and right to catch them and set them down on the grid below. Points come from arranging rows, columns or diagonals of a single color, and each level sets its own pattern for you to complete. The pressure builds steadily: tiles fall faster, arrive several at a time, and come in a greater number of colors as you climb through the waves, so a board you were comfortable with a minute ago turns into a scramble.

Klax endures because it is instantly readable and very hard to put down, the sort of puzzle game that starts as a few quiet minutes and ends an hour later with you still chasing one more pattern. The ramp, the paddle and the steady rise in speed need no explanation to a newcomer, which is why it keeps finding new players. For collectors, Tengen's Genesis catalogue is a chapter of Sega history in its own right, and Klax is one of the most approachable and most played pieces of it.
