Kung-Fu Heroes is a bright, busy overhead action game developed by Micro Academy and published by Culture Brain USA, first appearing in 1986 and following an arcade game in which the two heroes were named Lee and Loo. Returning home from a long trip, the kung fu masters Jacky and Lee find that Princess Min-min has been kidnapped and the 10 treasures of the kingdom stolen, which sends them fighting their way into eight different castles. Kung-Fu Heroes stands out for its cheerful, cartoonish look and for how quickly it drops you into the action.

You see the floor from above and move freely in four directions, punching straight ahead and leaping into a Moon Sault Kick that can be powered up into a Miracle Kick. Defeating a set number of enemies opens the doorway onward, and a Quick Passage Zone sometimes appears as a shortcut through areas holding stronger enemies. Beaten enemies leave power ups behind, with effects that range from invincibility and stronger attacks to extra lives, projectile attacks and the weakening of particular foes. Two players share a single screen, both in the fight at once, and Kung-Fu Heroes is also one of the few games built to work with the Nintendo Power Glove.

What keeps players loyal to Kung-Fu Heroes is its rhythm: short, dense stages, constant movement and the little rush of a somersault kick landing in the middle of a crowd. It is forgiving enough to enjoy casually and tough enough that reaching the final castle feels earned, and with a second player beside you it turns into friendly chaos.
