Landstalker - for Genesis

Landstalker is an action role playing adventure for the Sega Genesis, developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega of America in 1992. It is best known for its isometric presentation: the whole world is drawn at an angle, with platforms, ledges and chests laid out in three dimensions, which gives Landstalker a look quite unlike other quests on the system. The story sends Nigel, the Landstalker of the title, to a mythical island once ruled by the tyrant King Nole, who crushed his people with heavy taxes and then vanished along with the vast treasure he had stolen from them.

You explore as Nigel, hunting that lost fortune through towns, dungeons and open country, talking to the people you meet and dealing with what stands in your way sword in hand. Jumping matters as much as fighting here: a great deal of Landstalker is about judging heights and distances in that isometric view, finding a route across a room, and reaching the chest or the switch that opens the path forward. Puzzles, traps and hidden routes are woven through the dungeons, and it is a single player quest from start to finish.

Players still love Landstalker for its warmth and its humour, for a hero who is mostly in it for the money, and for the satisfaction of finally working out a jump that had you stuck all afternoon. It stands as one of the more ambitious adventures Sega published on the Genesis, and it belongs in a collection as the console's definitive isometric quest, a game people seek out by name years after finishing it.
