Last Action Hero - for Genesis

Last Action Hero is an action game for the Sega Genesis based on the 1993 Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name, developed by B.I.T.S. and published by Sony Imagesoft in 1993. You take the part of movie hero Jack Slater, teamed up with his biggest fan Danny Madigan, whose magic movie ticket can carry the pair of them between the world of the film and the real world. That premise is what gives Last Action Hero its shape, a film adaptation that keeps moving back and forth between the silver screen and the street.

Most of your time is spent fighting through the most dangerous criminals the story can throw at you, punching and kicking your way across stage after stage as Slater. Driving sequences break up the brawling with wild chases, and the ticket keeps shifting the setting between the movie and reality as the plot advances. It is a single player adventure, and it builds toward a confrontation with the arch henchman Benedict, who has to be beaten if the story is going to get its happy ending.

Last Action Hero is remembered fondly by players with a soft spot for early nineties movie games, the days when a film licence landed on cartridge while the posters were still up. It carries the big set pieces, the swagger and the momentum of the film it comes from, and playing as Slater still raises a grin. For collectors, Last Action Hero is a tidy snapshot of 1993 and a Sony Imagesoft release that sits well alongside the other Genesis film adaptations of the period.
