Legends of the Diamond - The Baseball Championship Game - for NES

Legends of the Diamond: The Baseball Championship Game is a Nintendo Entertainment System baseball title from 1992, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai America. Its hook is history. Baseball has been the national pastime of the United States for well over a century, and the game leans on that long memory, on the inspiration of figures like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron and Dizzy Dean, to frame a tournament for the ages. What sets Legends of the Diamond apart from a crowded NES baseball shelf is the role it hands you: you are not only out on the field, you are the manager deciding who takes it.

You begin by choosing which greats will fill out your lineup, then you call every shot from the dugout and on the grass. Bring in a relief pitcher when an arm tires, send up a pinch hitter, try a double steal, slide into home, swing for the fences, or dive for a catch that should not be possible. Legends of the Diamond supports two players, so a friend can take the other bench and turn the championship into an argument settled nine innings at a time.

Players still enjoy Legends of the Diamond for that managerial streak. Plenty of NES baseball games put the bat in your hands; fewer ask you to build the roster first and then live with the choice. The pace is relaxed, the controls are straightforward, and a full series is a fine way to spend a slow afternoon. For collectors, this is a late NES sports release with a distinctive premise, and Legends of the Diamond rounds out a baseball shelf that would otherwise look a little too similar from spine to spine.
