Lethal Enforcers - for Genesis

Lethal Enforcers came to the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Konami as a home version of its arcade shooting game. You take the part of a police officer working to rid the streets of the criminals out to make your day hell, and the digitized photographic look of the characters and backgrounds gave Lethal Enforcers a harder edge than most of what shared the shelf with it. It stands out as one of the very few shooting gallery games on the system, and the Genesis release was built around Konami's Justifier light gun, which the cartridge supports.

This is a first person shooter in the arcade sense: the scene sits in front of you and criminals appear from doorways, windows, vehicles and crowds. Aim wisely and quickly, because they fire back and your lives can disappear in seconds. Bystanders stand in the same frame, so every shot has to be judged rather than sprayed. Stronger weapons turn up during the stages to help you along the way. The difficulty setting changes how much crime you face, and two players can take on the streets together, which is where Lethal Enforcers is at its loudest and best.

People still love Lethal Enforcers because it delivers arcade immediacy with no warm up: switch it on, point, and the pressure starts. Sessions are short and sharp, scores are easy to compare, and a friend on the second controller turns the whole thing into a party. For collectors it carries extra weight, since light gun games on the Genesis form a small group and Lethal Enforcers is the title that defined them. A copy on the shelf is a reminder of the years when home consoles were chasing the arcade as closely as they possibly could.
