Little Samson - for NES

Little Samson is a 1992 platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Takeru and published by Taito. The Imperial Forgy has been invaded by Ta-Keed, the Prince of Darkness, and only the owners of the Magic Bells can hold his forces back. Little Samson stands out for its cast: instead of one hero with a set of upgrades, you command four, a mountaineering youth, a dragon, a living statue of solid stone and a small bomb carrying mouse, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and life bar.

You can switch between the four at any time, and most of Little Samson is about choosing well. Samson climbs walls and ceilings and throws his bell. Kikira the Dragon Lord soars and breathes fire. Gamm the Rock Lord shrugs off hazards and crushes enemy troops with granite fists. K.O. the mouse is tiny and quick, scurrying past monsters and setting time bombs where nobody else can reach. Stages are built so every hero gets a moment to shine, bosses test whether you picked the right one, and the design stays generous while still asking for skill.

Players still rank Little Samson among the finest platformers on the system. The art is detailed, the controls are precise, the character switching never feels like a gimmick, and the whole game was made with obvious care at a point when the NES was already giving way to newer machines. That late arrival is also why Little Samson is one of the most sought after titles in the library, a game many collectors chase for years. On a shelf it is a prize, and in the console it lives up to the reputation.
