Littlest Pet Shop: Beach Friends is a life simulation for the Nintendo DS, developed by Electronic Arts Salt Lake, published by Electronic Arts and released in 2009. It is the second edition of the Littlest Pet Shop video game and one of several themed versions on the system, this one taking the toy line's pets to the coast. Littlest Pet Shop: Beach Friends arrives with a new cast of quirky pets and their best friends, and one goal in mind: the biggest Littlest Pet Shop party of the year.
Getting to that party is the game. You take on quests, deliver invitations, serve up ice cream and style your pets, with a few special surprises saved for along the way. It is built for short, satisfying sessions: a task, a reward, and a pet that looks a little more ready for the party than it did before. Two players can play together, which mattered a great deal to friends who both owned a Nintendo DS.
Littlest Pet Shop: Beach Friends is remembered warmly by the people who grew up with it, and that generation is now old enough to come looking for the cartridges again. It is gentle, bright and unhurried, with nothing to fail and plenty of small things to tidy and finish, which is a rarer combination than it sounds. Anyone building out the Nintendo DS life simulation shelf will want Littlest Pet Shop: Beach Friends in the set, both as a record of how enormous the toy line was in 2009 and as a game that still does exactly what it promises.
