Luminous Arc 2 - for NDS

Luminous Arc 2 is a strategy role playing game for the Nintendo DS, developed by Image Epoch and published by Atlus in 2008. Its promise is simple: more strategy, more witches, more fun. The threat of a rogue Witch looms over Carnava, the Queen calls upon the Magic Association to save the land, and the whole thing is carried by beautiful hand drawn graphics and a stunning score from Yasunori Mitsuda's Procyon Studio. That last detail is a large part of why Luminous Arc 2 is still talked about among Nintendo DS strategy fans.

Battles play out on grids in the tradition of the genre, and Luminous Arc 2 adds the Engagement system, an intriguing tactical feature that grants potent Witch powers and ties your bonds with the cast to what you can bring into a fight. The mechanics around it were refined as well: an upgraded interface, polished touch controls and rebalanced gameplay, all of which make this a smoother game to sit down with than its predecessor. Multiplayer support rounds things out, with two players able to take each other on.

Players hold on to Luminous Arc 2 because the Nintendo DS shelf of strategy role playing games is short and this is one of the good ones. It is colorful and talkative where the genre can be austere, the hand drawn art looks lovely on the small screens, and the score gives scenes a weight that sprites alone could not carry. Atlus releases tend to be sought after by collectors, and Luminous Arc 2 is no exception: it is a cartridge people look for on purpose. If you want tactics with personality, make room for it.
