Lunar Pool - for NES

Lunar Pool is a billiards game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Compile and published by FCI in 1985. It was sold as the first advanced home video billiards game, and the claim rested on one idea: instead of a single rectangular table, Lunar Pool hands you sixty of them, in shapes that bend, pinch and open out in ways no pool hall table ever would. Each one is a fresh geometry problem with a cue in your hand.

The controls are easy to learn. You set up the electronic cue stick, aim the cue ball, choose the power you need and shoot, then watch the ball ricochet around the table toward a pocket. Scores are kept automatically. You can work through all sixty stages in order or jump straight to a favorite, and a friction setting lets you make the surface slick or sluggish, which changes everything about how a shot travels. Because of the table shapes, banks and rebounds matter far more here than in a straight game of pool. Lunar Pool also supports two players.

Lunar Pool endures because its central twist still works. The physics feel clean, the sixty stages run from gentle to genuinely cruel, and the game rewards the same patient thinking a real table does while asking questions a real table never could. It is one of the better looking early NES releases as well, calm and uncluttered. For collectors, Lunar Pool is an easy recommendation: an early Compile title, a sports game that plays like a puzzle game, and a cartridge that always finds a second player in the room.
